A dental implant is composed of three parts: the titanium implant, the abutment or post, and the crown. The titanium implant is twisted into the jaw bone like a screw. A natural process called “osseointegration” takes place in a few months, where the jaw bone grows into the implant. The abutment is attached to the implant as a base for the crown. A prosthodontist makes and fits these materials for the patient. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon places the implant into the patient’s jaw. Implants may replace one or more teeth (image a), or the entire set, instead of using removable dentures. Several implants will be placed to firmly fix the artificial set of teeth (image b).

If you’re thinking about getting dental implants, you might be thrilled to know that there is a 90-95% success rate for dental implant procedures, depending on where the implant is doing to be. 90% is the implant is going to be in the upper jaw, while 95% is the success rate for implants in the lower jaw. These statistics make dental implants one of the most successful dental operations.

Of course, if you do not take care of your implants – much like natural teeth – you may still suffer from failure of the dental implant. This is especially true for smokers, who are usually advised to stop smoking if they are to undergo a dental implant procedure. But all of these things are preventable, and if you take proper care of your implants, you will enjoy it’s lasting benefits and get your money’s worth.

An old man cried out, “my grandchildren do not understand what I’m saying. I am like a mute person but I am not; I just have no teeth already. Dental implants are too expensive if my entire missing teeth will be replaced with artificial ones”.

Yes, as far I know, dental implants are far more expensive than partial (or full) dentures for the reason that dental implants make use of titanium screws (for Osseointegration) and the procedure is more complex than having dentures. Dentures too have a tendency to break into half if you’ve bitten hard food (such as spare ribs or hard tacos). The advantage of having removable dentures is that, you can clean it with your toothbrush separately, so, hard to reach dirt and stains can be removed.

Dental Implants are more convenient, durable and stronger compared to bridges and dentures. In addition, it may be used in conjunction or support with alternative restorative counterparts for maximum effectiveness, making it a better solution to the problem of missing teeth. It is more comfortable and secured since they practically become part of you permanently, compared to poor fitting dentures which can possibly slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur on your words. Hence, it improves speech and makes eating easier at the same time. Moreover, it improves oral health which also means improved self-esteem. It can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.

Do you experience fear or paranoia that dental implants will not work for you? Do fear that you’ll be splurging a lot of money for something that you won’t be satisfied with? Then let’s take a look at how dental implant procedures can be successful.

Its success is not only dependent on the skill of the dentist or orthodontist, but also of other factors such as the person’s bone condition. A good oral hygiene can also deter the person from having “over all” dental implants (all teeth). People who have undergone this fantastic treatment have experienced relief and have lessened a large chunk of their burden from eating the food they missed when they were still toothless.

A successful dental implant procedure largely depends on the dentist’s skill in placing an implant, and the ability of the patient’s bone to integrate with the implant. Osteoporosis is associated with the bone’s decrease in mass and strength, making the bone more susceptible to fracture. The elderly, especially women after menopause, are more prone to osteoporosis. But dental implant is still a good option, the first step is to seek medical clearance for surgery. If the doctor allows an elderly to undergo surgery, then the dental implant specialist may proceed. Such patients are given longer time to heal after extractions and during the implant healing phase.

The saying that your gums is a very good indicator to your overall health maybe true after all.

Doctors have long associated that diabetes and high blood pressure are two of the most contributory factors to strokes in the UK. There has long been a suspicion between a link that exists between high blood pressure and gum disease that till now remained such.

Studies are showing that there is indeed a link and that the risk gum disease poses is greater that that of the two previous diseases. It shows that something as trivial as oral care can exert such a great impact on one’s health.

Instead of the long and often tedious waiting process associated with staged implants that take anywhere from a few months to almost half a year. Speed implants gives you a missing tooth instantly but not without risk.

First of all, the process of waiting for osseointegration (the process by which the implant is anchored onto by the surrounding tissue and bone making it more stable) is still the most preferred method for it allows ample time to stabilize the base for the implant. Speeding up the process leaves you with an implant that has a higher possibility of failure for it has no firm base to hold on to.

Speed implants are quite amiable to most for it allows you a quick fix for an embarrassing situation. Say you have to get married and want that perfect smile, then it would surely be one to consider but be sure to ask for your dentist’s opinion on the matter so you get the whole picture.

Every puff you make with that cigarette stick contains 4,000 different kinds of toxic chemicals. From the not-so-dangerous nicotine, to poisonous arsenic, these chemicals have the capability to destroy not only your lungs and other internal organs but also that of your teeth, gums and mouth (where do you puff the smoke anyway?).

It is a fact that smokers are not advised to have dental implants because of the complications that may arise during the procedure (periodontitis due to smoking etc.). However, if you have missing teeth, you may want to try dentures. There are two types of dentures: full and partial ones. Full dentures are for those who have lost all their teeth (upper or lower), while partial are for those who have lost only some (pretty self explanatory).

As we all know, surgery is one of the most dangerous procedures in the medical world (it requires a lot of expertise from the doctors’ end). Body parts of patients are surgically opened using scalpels and other medical tools for treatment purposes.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is concerned about the improvement of hard and soft tissue imperfections of the oral and maxillofacial region. It is also concerned about the treatment of a broad range of infections and fixing damages in said region. Its scope covers big wounds or injuries, diseases in the face, neck, jaw and any part of the head for that matter. Maxillofacial surgeons have advanced surgical degrees and are originally trained in dentistry schools.
